You might notice that on the photograph at the top of the page the Black Phantom Tetra nearest to the front is looking over his fishy shoulder in a manner that can only be described as harried.
And well he might with me in control of the water chemistry. I'm having a bad time of it all round and have already killed off 6 unsuspecting fish, 5 Neon tetra and a Corydoras pygmaeus. I'm begining to think that the FBI should do a profile on me and distribute it to all the reputable Tropical Fish Retailers in England!

Fish keeping is not for the faint of heart, especially in the early stages of establishing a tank. Here's a poem I wrote about the perils of the new tropical fish aquarium:
The New Aquarium

I've had enough of death,
sucked to the filter wet
and wide-eyed, scales
caught in spiky leaves
gleaming quietly out of sight.
Sleeping with the fishes
in more ways than one when
the dead are in your bedroom
and seven becomes six, five,
four, three, and on…
Beware the new aquarium,
death lurks, camouflaged in
the white flecked water,
waiting for the eager beginner.

Never watch your fish after lights out! I have decided that this should be a hard and fast rule of fishkeeping. You really do not want to see what they get up to in the dark - trust me, you'll be so busy wondering why they've gone mad and are dashing about the tank and gazing adoringly at their reflection that you won't get any sleep yourself.
Fish can drive you mad, if humans don't get at least five hours of REM sleep a night we can't function properly. It's a fiendish plot by fish kind to keep us in our place!
